From Proto-Germanic *þrēduz, from Proto-Indo-European *treh₁-tu-, from *terh₁- ‎(“rub, twist”). Germanic cognates include Old Frisian thrēd, Old Saxon thrād, Old High German drāt, Old Norse þráðr.
