Classically always used in the plural, արշալուրշք ‎(aršalurškʿ), and with the preposition ընդ ‎(ənd). Usually undeclined, but the following form are attested: աչալրջացն ‎(ačʿalrǰacʿn), աչալրջոցն ‎(ačʿalrǰocʿn), աշալրջոցն ‎(ašalrǰocʿn), աջալրջոցն ‎(aǰalrǰocʿn), աջալջուցն ‎(aǰalǰucʿn).

Etymology

From *արշալուրջ ‎(*aršalurǰ). The second part is լուրջ ‎(lurǰ, “half-dark”). The first part is probably an Iranian borrowing; compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(auruša-, “white”), Sanskrit अरुष ‎(aruṣá-, “reddish, light red, glowing, fire-coloured”) and Old Armenian loanword Արուսեակ ‎(Aruseak). Alternatively, the first part is from արջն ‎(arǰn, “black; dark”). The forms ending in -լոյս ‎(-loys) were modified folk-etymologically under the influence of լոյս ‎(loys).
