Etymology

From Middle High German agrāz, from Medieval Latin agresta ‎(“unripe fruit, verjuice”), likely applied to the gooseberry due to its sour taste. Compare Austro-Bavarian Ogrosl ‎(“gooseberry”). Alternatively borrowed from Polish agrest ‎(“gooseberry”), from the same Latin source.
