From Sogdian ʾʾwzyy (*ōwazē) (Manichean), ʾʾwzʾk (*āwaze, *āwāz), possibly from Akkadian [script needed] (apsu) or Sumerian [script needed] (abzu). Possibly related to Middle Persian ʾpzn' (ābzan), Old Armenian աւազ (awaz, sand), and Arabic حَوْض (ḥawḍ).
