Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer-. Indo-Iranian cognates include Persian شمردن ‎(šomordan, “to calculate”), Kurdish ژماردن ‎(žmārdin, “to count”) and Pashto شمېرل ‎(śmerël, “to count”). Akin to Ancient Greek μέρμερος ‎(mérmeros, “mischievous, baneful”) and Latin memor ‎(“mindful”).
