Given the Japanese pronunciation, a derivation from German seems more likely: the /θi/ sound of English voiceless ⟨thi⟩ is generally borrowed as シ ‎(shi) in Japanese, whereas the /ti/ sound of German ⟨thi⟩ becomes チ ‎(chi). English /ə/ also usually becomes ア ‎(a), while German /ʊ/ becomes ウ ‎(u).
