Etymology

Compound of 簫 ‎(shō, “xiao”, a kind of Chinese flute) +‎ の ‎(no, possessive particle) +‎ 笛 ‎(fue, “flute”).^[1]

Synonymous with just 簫 ‎(shō) on its own.^[1] However, given the rarity of this kanji in writing, and the large number of possible single-kanji terms pronounced as shō in Japanese, the longer version that specifies 笛 ‎(“flute”) is used to clarify and disambiguate.
