From 샅 (sat, “gap”) + 샅 (sat, “gap”) + —이 (-i, “adverbial suffix”), literally "gap by gap; everywhere". Compare similar derivations of 낱낱이 (nannachi, “one by one”), 곳곳이 (gotgosi, “everywhere”), 몫몫이 (mongmoksi, “share by share; every share”), 앞앞이 (apapi, “before each person; each”), 집집이 (jipjibi, “house by house”).
