From Proto-Germanic *wiþrą, more specifically from the compound form *wiþra-, which seems to have analogically replaced the form of the preposition. Cognate to German wider ‎(“against”), Dutch weer ‎(“again”), English wither ‎(“against”), Old Norse viðr ‎(“against”).
