From Proto-Germanic *-iþō. Cognate to Gothic -𐌹𐌸𐌰 (-iþa), -𐌹𐌳𐌰 (-ida) as in 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌳𐌹𐌸𐌰 (mildiþa) and 𐌰𐌿𐌸𐌹𐌳𐌰 (auþida). Cognate to Dutch -de as in liefde, vreugde. Descendant of -ida is German -de in Freude, Gemeinde. In modern German, this suffix is not productive anymore.
