From a Germanic given name which contains Proto-Germanic*ad-(“noble”) and Proto-Germanic*mēr-(“famous”). ad- is a short form of Proto-Germanic *adal(“noble”) as in Adolph, Albert etc. See also Old High German adal. For mǣr-/mār-, see Old English mære.
