1. The one of three major dialect groups of the German language which is spoken primarily in central Germany, Luxembourg, easternmost Belgium, and southeastern Limburg (in the Netherlands); characterized by the preservation of Proto-Germanic *-pp-, *-mp- and (in most varieties) that of *d-.

Usage notes

• Yiddish is usually included in this group, at least in traditional German dialectology.
