Old High Germangans, from Proto-Germanic*gans. The modern form has spread from the East replacing older forms without -n- (as occurred in western dialects of German and even Dutch gans). This development obviously began at an early stage, although a native Luxembourgish form is conserved in (now dated) Gaus.
