Originally *Hebanne from Old High Germanhevanna(“midwife”), later contorted to Hebamme to resemble Amme(“wet nurse”). This development is still reflected in modern German, inasmuch as the word can either be pronounced as a compound ("Heb-Amme") or as one word ("Hebamme").
