Morast f (genitive Morasts or Morastes, plural Moraste or Moräste)
From Middle Low German mōras, an alteration of Middle Dutch maras on the basis of the predecessor of German Moor (“bog; moor”). (Compare the same in modern Dutch moeras.) The Dutch word is borrowed from Old French mareis, from Frankish *marisk (“marsh, swamp”), from Proto-Germanic *mariskaz (“marsh, swamp”), whence also German Marsch.
