From the SpanishTucsón[tukˈson], from the O'odhamCuk Ṣon(literally “Spring at the base of the black mountain”)[tʃʊk ʂɔːn], the “black mountain” in question being the summit now known as Sentinel Peak, or “A Mountain”, just to the west of Tucson’s downtown area.
