Etymology

From Old High German ahsla. Cognate with Old Norse ǫxl ‎(“shoulder”) ( > Danish aksel, Icalandic öxl) and ǫxull ‎(“axle”) (> Danish aksel), English axle. Either cognate with or derived from Latin axilla ‎(“shoulder joint”). Cognate with Sanskrit अक्ष ‎(ákṣa, “axle”).
