From obsolete blomster (not to be confused with the modern indefinite plural form), from Old Norse blómstr (compare Norwegian Nynorsk blomster), a synonym to blóm and blomi (compare blom and blome/blomme and English bloom), a collective noun for flowers and leaves, akin to Dutch bloesem, bloem, German Blume and English blossom.
