Possibly from a Middle Low German noun, from a verb meaning "howl, bellow" (compare German Low Germanbröllen). This would make it cognate to GermanBrüller(“joke, something funny”, literally “roarer”); Englishhowler(“hilarious joke”, “painfully obvious mistake”) is formed the same way.
