Etymology

From a hypothetical earlier *clochiola, diminutive of Vulgar Latin *clocea, from Latin cochlea ‎(“snail”), borrowed from Ancient Greek κοχλίας ‎(kokhlías), cognate with κόχλος ‎(“shellfish”).
