Etymology

From cotogno ‎(“quince tree”), or less likely a Vulgar Latin root cotōnea, taken as a feminine singular from the plural of Latin cotōneum, ultimately from Ancient Greek κυδώνιον ‎(kudṓnion). Also possibly from mela cotogna, from Latin māla cotōnea, also a feminine singular from the plural of mālum cotōneum ‎(“quince tree”).
