dégager

dégager

French

Verb

dégager

  1. to free (someone or something)
  2. (military) to relieve (a town, army, etc.)
  3. to release (funds)
  4. to clear (a table, area, nose etc.)
  5. to give off, emit, radiate
  6. to draw, bring out (a conclusion, idea etc.)
  7. (sports) to clear (the ball)
  8. (intransitive, vulgar) to get out of here

Conjugation

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written dégage- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a “soft” /ʒ/ and not a “hard” /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
