deuterotheme

deuterotheme

English

Noun

deuterotheme (plural deuterothemes)

  1. (onomastics) The second element of a name composed of two traditional name roots.
The Slavic given names Jaromir and Ludomir both contain the deuterotheme -mir ("peace").

Usage notes

A deuterotheme is not the same as a suffix. Most deuterothemes originate in older forms of a language, and come from an independent word with its own meaning, such as -mir from Proto-Slavic *mirъ (peace; world).
