Etymology

Proto-Germanic *aglijaną, *aglujaną ‎(“to trouble, vex”), from Proto-Germanic *agluz ‎(“troublesome, painful, loathsome”), from Proto-Indo-European *agh-lo-, from Proto-Indo-European *agh- ‎(“to be afraid, be depressed”). Akin to Gothic -agljan, Middle Low German egelen "to annoy", Old English eġle "loathsome, grievous, painful", Gothic agls "shameful"
