Etymology

From Greek χαρτί ‎(chartí), possibly partly through a South Slavic intermediate chartija (compare Bulgarian харти́я ‎(hartíja), Macedonian хартија ‎(hartija)). Compare Daco-Romanian hârtie. Cf. also carti, which as the same Ancient Greek root but passed through Latin.
