From Old Turkic 𐰴𐱃𐰆𐰣 (χatun/katun), from Sogdian χwatēn (χwa self + tāw power, strength),[1][2][3] or Saka χattuna,[4] from Proto-Turkic *Kādɨn (relative-in-law), which may be derived from Proto-Altaic *ki̯ā́du (relative).[5]
