From Middle Dutch hoeve, from Old Dutch houva, hoba, from Proto-Germanic *hōbō ‎(“plot of land”). Cognates include German Hube, Old Saxon hōƀa; beyond the Germanic languages it is related to Ancient Greek κῆπος ‎(kêpos, “garden, orchard”).
