From Proto-Germanic *hugjaną ‎(“think, consider”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌷𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽, Old Norse huga (Icelandic hugsa ‘to think’). Related to Middle Scots huik ‘regard, consider’.
