From Old Spanish aymant, apocopic form of aymante (“lodestone”), from Old French aïmant (“lodestone”), from Vulgar Latin *adimas, from Latin adamās (“very hard steel; adamant; diamond”), ultimately from Ancient Greek ἀδάμας (adámas), with the same meaning. Reinforced or reintroduced by modern French aimant (“magnet”).
