Etymology

Cognate with Latvian laĩks, Old Church Slavonic отълѣкъ ‎(otŭlěkŭ, “remainder”). The Latvian metatony (laĩks < *làiks) suggests an original oxytone neuter. On the basis of Ancient Greek λοιπόν ‎(loipón, “remainder”) we can theoretically posit a Proto-Indo-European *loikʷóm ‎(“remainder”).[1] In any case, related to laikýti ‎(“hold, keep”) and lìkti ‎(“remain”); see these entries for more.
