Probably from Frankish *lisa ‎(“rut, furrow, track”), from Proto-Germanic *lisō, *laistiz, *laista-, *laisō ‎(“track, trace”), from Proto-Indo-European *leyəs- ‎(“furrow, track”), related to Old High German lesa ‎(“wrinkle, line”), Old English lāst ‎(“footstep, track, trace”), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍃 ‎(laists, “track, trace”). Possibly influenced by Frankish *lista ‎(“border, edge”), see liste, last.
