From Proto-Germanic *nikwus, *nikwis, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *neygʷ- ‎(“to wash”). Cognate with Middle Dutch necker (Dutch nikker ‎(“demon”)), Old High German nicchus (German Nix ‎(“water sprite”)), Old Norse nykr (Faroese nykur, Swedish näck).
