From Proto-Turkic *ōj- (to pick, peck), possibly from Proto-Altaic *ṓjV (to sew, pierce).[1] Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (oy-, to hollow sth. out), Azeri oymaq (to carve, excavate), Bashkir уйыу (uyïw, to hollow), Kazakh ою (oyw, to etch), Kyrgyz оюу (oyuu, to ornament, etch), Turkmen oýmak (to carve), Uzbek oʻymoq (to carve).
