Old French sojor by vowel dissimilation (first ‘o’ → ‘é’), from (assumed) Vulgar Latin *subdiurnāre, from Latin sub- (“under, a little over”) + Late Latin diurnus (“lasting for a day”), from Latin diurnum (“day”). Cognate to English sojourn.[1]
