Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *scoclus, *scoplus, from Classical Latin scopulus, from Ancient Greek σκόπελος ‎(skópelos, “lookout place: hence peak, headland, promontory”). The Italian may have been borrowed from or influenced by a northern Italian language form such as Ligurian. Compare French écueil.
