From Vulgar Latin *snellus "brisk, lively" (compare Old French esnel, isnel "sudden, quick", Occitan isnel, irnel "lively"), from Frankish *snel, snell "sudden, quick" from Proto-Germanic *snellaz (“active, sudden, quick”).
