From tabasser; itself from a radical *tab ("hit"). Tabac is more or less the equivalent of tapage; compare tabasser and taper.

The "correct" spelling should have been *tabas as tracasser and tracas, fracasser and fracas, the -ac spelling being influenced by the frequent noun tabac ("plant").
