Etymology

From teningnum ‎(“the die”), the dative definite singular form of teningur ‎(“a die”) + er ‎(“is”), the third person singular of vera ‎(“to be”) + kastað ‎(“have been thrown”), the active supine of kasta ‎(“to throw”). Literally "the die has been thrown".
