Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *weganą, from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ-. Cognate with Old Frisian wega, Old Saxon wegan, Dutch wegen, Old High German wegan (German bewegen), Old Norse vega (Swedish väga), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍅𐌹𐌲𐌰𐌽 ‎(gawigan). The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek ϝοχος ‎(wokhos), ὄχος ‎(ókhos, “vehicle”), Latin vehō ‎(“carry”).
