Etymology

From Middle Dutch seehont. Synchronically equivalent to zee ‎(“sea”) +‎ hond ‎(“hound, dog”).

Middle Dutch seehont, is possibly an alteration of seelhont ‎(literally “seal-hound, seal-dog”), from seel ‎(“seal”), from Proto-Germanic *selhaz. Compare Low German Saalhund ‎(“seal”).
