From Old Norse Óláfr, from Proto-Norse *ᚨᚾᚢᛚᚨᛁᛒᚨᛉ (Anulaibaʀ) (whence also variant Óleifr, Áleifr), consisting of *ᚨᚾᚢ- (anu-, “ancestor”) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (“old woman, ancestor”)) and *-ᛚᚨᛁᛒᚨᛉ (-laibaʀ, “remainder”) (from Proto-Germanic *laibijaną (“to leave”), causative of Proto-Germanic *lībaną (“to remain”), from Proto-Indo-European *lip- (“to stick, glue”)).
