Etymology

From pre-Christian Livonian Ilo ‎(“joy”) , cognate with Finnish ilo, latinised as Ylo in the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia. Revived through 19th century literature and by folk etymology associated with Estonian ülev ‎(“exalted”) and üllas ‎(“noble”).
