Etymology

Unknown. Even though problematic, it could derive from a diminutive in -zë of Proto-Albanian *ewd-, from *h₂weyd- ‎(“to sing”), compare Ancient Greek ᾆσμα ‎(âisma) and ᾠδή ‎(ōidḗ).
