From Proto-Germanic *þan-, *þana- ‎(“at that (time), then”), from Proto-Indo-European *to- ‎(“demonstrative pronoun”). Cognate with Old Frisian þenne ‎(“then”), Old Saxon thanna ‎(“then”), Old High German danne ‎(“then”). Related to Old English þā ‎(“then, at that time”).
