σπάκα (spaka)
Attested in Herodotus as the Median word for the “dog”.
From West Iranian *spaka (“dog-like, relating to dogs”) (compare Talysh sıpə), from Proto-Iranian (compare Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬁 (spā)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit श्वन् (śvā́)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ. Cognate with Persian سگ (sag).
