Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *ključь, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂u- ‎(“nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors”). Cognate with Ancient Greek κλείς ‎(kleís, “key”), Latin clāvus ‎(“nail”) and Polish klucz ‎(“key”).
