From Arabic أَفَنْدِي ‎(ʾafandī), perhaps via Turkish efendi, from Greek αφέντη ‎(afénti), vocative of αφέντης ‎(aféntis), from Ancient Greek αὐθέντης ‎(authéntēs, “lord, master”).
