From Common Kypchak üj ("house, home", see the Kypchak cognates below), from Proto-Turkic *eb ‎(“dwelling place, house”).

Immediately cognate with Kazakh үй ‎(üy), Kyrgyz үй ‎(üy), Karachay-Balkar юй ‎(üy), Kumyk уьй ‎(üy), Southern Altai ӱй ‎(üy, “home, house”).
