גידל \ גִּדֵּל • ‎(gidél) ‎(pi'el construction, passive counterpart גודל \ גֻּדַּל)

1. (transitive) to grow, make bigger, magnify
   • Joshua 4:14, with translation of the Darby Bible:

     בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא גִּדַּל יהוה אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בְּעֵינֵי כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל‎

     bayóm hahú gidál YHVH et-y'hoshúa b'ené kol-yisraél

     On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel

   • Psalms 34:4, with translation of the King James Version:

     גַּדְּלוּ לַיהוה אִתִּי וּנְרוֹמְמָה שְׁמוֹ יַחְדָּו‎

     gad'lú lYHVH ití unrom'má sh'mó yachdáv

     O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

   • Esther 3:1, with translation of the King James Version:

     גִּדַּל הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ אֶת־הָמָן‎

     gidál hamélech achashverósh et-hamán

2. (transitive) to raise, rear (a child or animal); to grow (a plant)
   • Isaiah 49:21, with translation of the King James Version:

     מִי יָלַד־לִי אֶת־אֵלֶּה וַאֲנִי שְׁכוּלָה וְגַלְמוּדָה גֹּלָה וְסוּרָה וְאֵלֶּה מִי גִדֵּל‎

     mí yalad-lí et-éle vaaní sh'chulá v'galmudá golá v'surá v'éle mí gidél

     Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these?
