Ultimately from Arabic زَرَافَة (zarāfa), further etymology is disputed. Perhaps from Persian زرناپا (zurnāpā, “giraffe”), a compound of زرنا (zurnā, “flute, zurna”) and پا (pā, “leg”), or from Classical Syriac ܙܵܪܝܼܦܵܐ (zarāfa).
